Research & Development
The Action Lab is tackling the critical challenges to alt-protein parity & scale by focusing on the highest-impact, least-invested research problems.
To address the most challenging technological barriers facing alt-proteins, our lab works with a network of research centers, pilot production facilities, and collaborative hubs focused on developing scalable, commercial solutions.
Our facilities attract and equip leading scientists with the infrastructure & resources to achieve rapid, unencumbered scientific progress at a pace far faster than traditional research settings.
First project: The Data Garden:
Procure and analyze commodity plant derived proteins, determining key properties that can impact alternative protein products downstream.
Experiment with alternative processing protocols designed to improve downstream processing.
Share open source information to assist processors in creating more effective ingredients that are fit for purpose.
Commercialization
Once developed & validated, the Action Lab will share its learnings to help bring alt-protein solutions to market for widespread adoption and impact.
It will mobilize entrepreneurs, venture capital, and strategic partners to accelerate the time to market and prioritize the go-to-market channels that are best suited for rapid adoption and maximum impact.
Core Activities:
Help transform validated technologies into consumer-centric products
Commercialize solutions via one or more of the following pathways:
Publishing open-access research
Only if needed to accelerate adoption, licensing the technology to established players or spinning out venture-backed startups
Ecosystem Enablement
The Action Lab will galvanize the scientific & commercial ecosystems to advance the field of alt-protein innovation.
It will work as a force multiplier by sharing information openly, bringing innovators together, and improving coordination across the industry to eliminate duplicative work and reduce barriers to entry.
Core Activities:
Publish research priorities and coordinate research activities across organizations
Increase the sharing of IP within the ecosystem by publishing & licensing data
Build commercial partnerships that enable alt-protein startups to pilot their solutions with established players
“Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world.
Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
