Driving Protein Innovation for a Sustainable Future
The Sustainable Protein Action Lab is a purpose-built nonprofit research organization focused on commercially-viable scientific research to create a more sustainable food system.
By employing dedicated scientists and prioritizing commercial scalability from the beginning, the Action Lab fills the void between academic institutions focused on basic science and venture-backed companies with limited R&D runway.
The urgent need for a new model of R&D
With our global population expected to balloon to 10 billion people by 2050, there is a pressing need to find new, sustainable ways to feed our growing population.
Given the resource-intensive nature of animal agriculture, the only way to meet this demand is to shift our food systems towards alternative proteins. To do so, we must provide consumers with meat alternatives they will embrace — offering the tastes and textures they love without compromising on health, convenience, or cost.
But this takes time. Time to develop better technologies, productize them, and bring them to the mass market.
This all starts with focused, commercially-minded research — research that needs to happen today.
ANIMAL AGRICULTURE IMPACTS:
Climate change
Resource use
Biodiversity loss
Food security risk
Antibiotic resistance
Zoonotic disease & pandemic risk
Worker safety & environmental justice
20%
of greenhouse gas emissions come from factory farming, the second largest emitter
75%
of agricultural land is used for livestock, yet it provides only one-third of the world’s protein
R&D dedicated to commercial impact
Our mission encompasses three key objectives:
Research & Development: rapidly develop novel, scalable alt-protein technologies
Commercialization: swiftly bring compelling alt-protein solutions to the mass market
Ecosystem Enablement: energize the ecosystem to invest in alt-protein innovation
